Box Hill CNY

February 17, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 11:00 pm

With 80,000 people in attendance each year, the Chinese New Year Festival in Box Hill is the biggest annual event in the City of Whitehorse. Starting at 11am on the Saturday 17th February 2018, the festival goes through the afternoon and evening, ending at 11pm at night.

Central Box Hill comes alive with people, colour, movement and sound. Dragon dancers weave through the crowd to the beat of drums. The festival showcases wonderful music, singing and dancing from our local community. Festival goers can enjoy games, rides, firecracker displays, music and performances, and market stalls selling souvenirs and delicious food.

Local residents come along in droves as do many visitors from across Melbourne. It’s a fantastic atmosphere that makes you feel like you’ve been transported to the bustling streets of Beijing, Hong Kong or Kuala Lumpur. It’s a wonderful way to showcase Box Hill and all that it has to offer to both regular and new visitors.

Celebrated for centuries, Chinese New Year brings families together and many follow the tradition of cleansing the house in order to sweep away any ill-fortune of the previous year and to make way for good luck.

2018 is the Year of the Dog according to Chinese zodiac, starting from Feb. 16, 2018 (Chinese New Year) and lasting to Feb. 4, 2019.

Dog is the eleventh in the 12-year cycle of Chinese zodiac sign. The Years of the Dog include 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018, 2030, 2042…

Dog is man’s good friend who can understand the human’s spirit and obey its master, whether he is wealthy or not. The Chinese regard it as an auspicious animal. If a dog happens to come to a house, it symbolizes the coming of fortune. The invincible God Erlang in Chinese legend used a loyal wolfhound to help him capture monsters.

People born in the Year of the Dog are usually independent, sincere, loyal and decisive according to Chinese zodiac analysis. They are not afraid of difficulties in daily life. These shining characteristics make them have harmonious relationship with people around.
